Around central highland in 5 days

Around central highland in 5 days

Day one, yellow track: 260 km, moving time 8 hrs, ascent 3500 m & descent 3000 m.

Starting at our main base in Reykjavík at Lambhagavegur 13 following gravel tracks for the majority of the first day ending up in Kerlingafjöll for the first night at an elevation of 690 meters above sea level surrounded with glaciers.  This leg includes driving along salmon river, stuðlaberg, driving from the American template to Eurasian template, passing the oldest parliament in the world as we know them today, Geysir, Gullfoss and a glacier view.

Day two, red track: 368 km, moving time 8 hrs, ascent 4100 m & descent 4800 m.

Keep driving to the north where the water soon starts to flow towards the north coast with totally new elements of nature.  Skagafjörður with its endless fields and farms opens up and is going to be our playground for the majority of the day.  Driving through 2 local farms  guided by the farmers themselves, lunch at the local bakery in Sauðárkrókur before blasting east on the local beach aiming for the abandoned farm Kólkuós on our way to very special rif in the east Skagafjörður.   From Skagafjörður are three routes (depending on the snow mass in the mountains) towards Eyjafjörður, passing Tröllaskagi by Siglufjarðarskarð over to Siglufjörður, Lágheiði over to Ólafsfjörður or Heljardalsheiði over to Svarfaðardal ending up at Dalvík for the night.

Day three, green track: 252 km, 7.5 hrs moving. Ascent 3050 m & 2800 m descent.

As we have reached Eyjafjörður a good look out for whales is mandatory as we head south on gravel roads towards Akureyri.  At Akureyri we will have a stop for 3 hrs.  Akureyri has  a nice selection of restaurants, coffee shops and so on. After a good pit stop both for us  & and the buggys we head on east, passing the marvelous Skógarböð followed by a climb over Vaðlaheiði arriving into Fnjóskadalur, trailing south through congested forest and a short stop at an old farm called Sörlastaðir.  Followed by Sörlastadir we will commence another climb parallel with Hellugnúpsá on our way  to Bárðardalur.  Arriving just north of Hliðarendi we will drive south Bárðardalur passing an old bridge over the mighty Skjálfandafljót on our way up to Svartárkot.  While driving through the farm of Svartárkot and hoping to meet the farmer for a short chat we will enter amazing farmland, covered with Birki, lava and Moss.  Soon Sellandafjall appears on the horizon with its airport strip and old hanger, but Sellandafjall is very popular for paragliding because of very common thermal winds in the area during the summer months.  This long day will end up at Mývatn

Day four, blue track: 409 km, 8 hrs moving. Ascent 2100 m & 1900 m descent.

After a good rest at Mývatn we will do 2/3 of the same route back to Bárðardalur, except this time we will head south onto Sprengisandur, upon the climb towards the mighty highland we will look at the Aldeyjarfoss with its marvellous stuðlaberg.   From there the next stop is going to be Nýjidalur, a hut north west of Vatnajökull, the biggest glacier in Europe.  From there on we will drive Vonarskarð, passing Hágöngulón, Skrokkalda, Þverölduvatn, Þórisvatn and the destination is going to be hotel Hrauneyjar.  If time permits it is an option to drive to Landmannalaugar for the natural pool and of course some amazing nature.

Day five, black track: 400 km, moving time 10 hrs, ascent 5680 m & 6000 m decent.

As the previous days we will share our local knowledge and share some of our rural trails that are not even commonly known by the general public in Iceland.  Starting the last day heading an old track just outside the hotel called Sigölduvegur Gamli heading towards Dómadalur, climbing the steep Pokahryggir aiming for Hrafntinnusker.   The incredible colours, steam from the geysers and some secret waterfalls are among amazing sceneries during this leg.  Rauðaskál, Háifoss, Gullfoss are among natural scenery before heading back to base in Reykjavík.
